Model Horse Glossary

There are a lot of terms and abbreviations in the model horse world. I do my best to make my website readable, accessible, and inclusive but there may be things lost in translation. Here is a short list of model horse glossary terms I've used on my website, and resources for more.

AR: Artist resin. This is a resin cast of an artist's original sculpture. They are more expensive than Breyer and Peter Stone models because they are typically higher quality and more detailed.

Body: A model suitable to be customized. These can be anywhere from a new model to one with heavy damage.

Breyer: A retail company that makes and produces plastic model horses. These are cheaper than Peter Stone horses.

CollectA Scale (1:18): Averages 4-5 inches high, but every model is different. CollectA is a different type of model horse by Breyer. They are made of a bendable, rubbery material. There is also another line of CollectA models called "Deluxe" that are 1:12 scale.

Classic / Freedom Scale (1:12): Averages 5-6 inches high, but every model is different. This scale was termed after Breyer's Classic scale collection, now renamed to Freedom scale.

CM: Custom.

Curio Scale (1:15): Averages 4 inches high, but every model is different. Only artist resin models come in this scale.

Finishwork: The process of painting a model horse to look as realistic and life-like as possible.

LSQ: Live (or local) show quality. This is a model that is high quality in mint or near mint condition with no breaks, scratches, or obvious rubs. Models must be high quality to be competitive in a live model horse show.

Mold: The particular sculpture that a model horse is produced on. A mold is the actual sculpture itself - a model is a specific release on a mold. A mold can be produced by an artist or a retailer like Breyer.

NAMHSA: North American Model Horse Shows Association, the association body behind NAN that consists of a large group of model horse show hobbyists.

NAN: North American Nationals, the model horse hobby’s national championship event for model horse showers in the USA, Canada and Mexico. A model is able to enter NAN after winning a 1st or 2nd place in its class at a local NAN-qualified show.

NIB: New in box. A model still sealed in its factory box.

OF: Original Finish. This is the factory paint a model has.

OOAK: One of a kind. This is a model in which there are no others like it. My custom models are all considered OOAKs.

Peter Stone / Stone Horses: A retail company that makes and produces model horses. These are more expensive than Breyer.

Portrait Model: A model that is created or painted in the likeness of a real-life horse using reference photos.

Stablemate Scale (1:32): Averages 2-3 inches high, but every model is different. This scale was termed after Breyer's Stablemate scale collection.

Traditional Scale (1:9): Averages 7 inches high, but every model is different. This scale was termed after Breyer's Traditional scale collection.

Venti Scale (1:20): Averages 3 inches high, but every model is different. Only artist resin models come in this scale.
