Custom Model Horses by Christy Johnston
Here is a sample of my completed model horse custom work. Each custom model horse has been finished to a one of a kind piece with my signature - CJ'[year]. I specialize in repainting model horses (finishwork) which breathes new life into an existing model - whether it's a Breyer, Peter Stone, resin, or another brand name sculpture. My model horse customs include portrait models based on real horses and unique pieces using blends of multiple reference horses.

The process starts with priming & prepwork to ensure the model is a smooth, faultless base (or body) for painting. This is a tedious process involving lots of sanding, filing, and filling imperfections - and the process is always repeated multiple times for a single model. After this stage, the model is painted using airbrush acrylics, hand-painted details, and pastels. As a standard for realism, I gloss eyes, hooves, nostrils, and the mouth unless I am requested otherwise. To protect the finishwork, every model is finished with layers of matte sealant.
